{"id":1736,"date":"2011-10-01T23:08:00","date_gmt":"2011-10-01T21:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gqm.lpl.univ-paris13.fr\/?p=1736"},"modified":"2025-11-08T23:13:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T22:13:19","slug":"award-quentin-thesis-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gqm.lpl.univ-paris13.fr\/index.php\/2011\/10\/01\/award-quentin-thesis-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Award: Quentin thesis award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Center for Cold Atom Research in the Paris Region (IFRAF) has recognized the high quality of the doctoral work of Quentin Beaufils by awarding him the \u201cYoung researcher Prize\u201d for 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Quentin Beaufils obtained his PhD from Paris Nord University in 2009 for his work in the Cold Atom \u2013 Degenerate Quantum Gas group of the Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he started his doctoral work, the chromium condensation program was at the magneto-optical trapping stage thus fairly far from the quantum degeneracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 20007, an innovative method to trap all the magnetic sublevels and the use of an efficient metastable state reservoir proved decisive to reach quantum degeneracy. After this breakthrough, a series of experiments could be carried with the chromium BEC among which we cite: the renormalization of the atom Land\u00e9 factor; the analysis of a new type of Feshbach resonance and the evidence for means to control the dipolar relaxation loss processes. The main result of Quentin&#8217;s thesis ie the realization of a dipolar multicomponent (spinor) condensate paved the way for the group current work on magnetism and superfluidity issues .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award ceremony took place in Paris during the workshop \u00ab&nbsp;Cold atoms and high-precision measurements&nbsp;\u00bb on October 6, 2011 . Quentin had then the opportunity to present his achievement in a 15 minute oral contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">French version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Quentin Beaufils recoit le prix jeune chercheur de l&#8217;Ifraf<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#8217;Institut Francilien de recherche sur les atomes froids (IFRAF) a reconnu la grande qualit\u00e9 du travail de doctorat de Quentin Beaufils en lui attribuant le &#8220;prix Jeune Chercheur 2011&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quentin Beaufils a pr\u00e9par\u00e9 son doctorat au Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers de 2007 \u00e0 2009 dans l&#8217;\u00e9quipe Atomes Froids (renomm\u00e9e depuis &#8220;Gaz Quantiques Dipolaires&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au d\u00e9but de sa th\u00e8se, l&#8217;\u00e9quipe ne disposait que d&#8217;un pi\u00e8ge magn\u00e9to-optique pour refroidir et pi\u00e9ger les atomes de chrome 52 et \u00e9tait bien loin de la d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rescence quantique. Quentin a su rapidement s&#8217;int\u00e9grer, se former aux techniques exp\u00e9rimentales et devenir un \u00e9l\u00e9ment moteur du projet exp\u00e9rimental. Son apport a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9terminant dans la mise en \u0153uvre des pi\u00e9geages magn\u00e9tique, optique et mixte des atomes m\u00e9tastables de chrome. Il a su mener \u00e0 bien le refroidissement \u00e9vaporatif tout-optique des atomes de chrome. En novembre 2007, apr\u00e8s la mise en place du proc\u00e9d\u00e9 de capture de tous les niveaux magn\u00e9tiques (m\u00e9thode originale utilisant des sweeps rf) et apr\u00e8s utilisation d&#8217;un nouvel \u00e9tat m\u00e9tastable plus favorable, la condensation du chrome a pu \u00eatre obtenue. Apr\u00e8s ce succ\u00e8s, de nouvelles exp\u00e9riences ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9es utilisant le condensat de Bose-Einstein de chrome (ce dispositif n&#8217;a qu&#8217;un seul autre \u00e9quivalent au monde, \u00e0 l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 de Stuttgart). Quentin, avec ses qualit\u00e9s d&#8217;exp\u00e9rimentateur, a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cieux dans l&#8217;obtention de r\u00e9sultats portant sur : &#8211; l&#8217;habillage rf et test m\u00e9canique de la renormalisation du facteur de Land\u00e9 ; &#8211; l&#8217;analyse d&#8217;une r\u00e9sonance de Feshbach avec canal d&#8217;entr\u00e9e en onde d ; &#8211; l&#8217;association rf de mol\u00e9cules de dichrome ; et le d\u00e9but de l&#8217;analyse des moyens de contr\u00f4le de la relaxation dipolaire. Gr\u00e2ce aux travaux de Quentin, l&#8217;\u00e9quipe sait manipuler et refroidir des atomes de chrome jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 la d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rescence quantique. L&#8217;article pr\u00e9sentant ce r\u00e9sultat a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 en juin 2008 et il est d\u00e9j\u00e0 cit\u00e9 48 fois ce qui t\u00e9moigne de l&#8217;importance de cette exp\u00e9rience pour la communaut\u00e9 des atomes froids. Son travail sert de socle aux recherches actuelles de l&#8217;\u00e9quipe portant sur les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s magn\u00e9tiques des gaz quantiques dipolaires et sur l&#8217;analyse d&#8217;une anisotropie de la superfluidit\u00e9 du condensat de chrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le prix lui sera d\u00e9cern\u00e9 au Salon Mesurexpo-PRI, le jeudi 6 octobre 2011 \u00e0 13h40 , Hall 7.3, Parc des Expositions de la porte de Versailles \u00e0 Paris. Quentin pr\u00e9sentera son travail de recherche \u00e0 cette occasion.
